Yoga is the transformation of the content of consciousness?
Yoga is the transformation of the content of consciousness? So what does this mean. Well, if
you look up consciousness it means a sense of one's personal or collective identity, including
the attitudes, beliefs, and sensitivities held by or considered characteristic of an individual or
group. In practicing yoga the past seven years I have discovered my own attitudes, beliefs
and sensitivities have changed drastically. For example, how I respond in situations that
maybe perceived as overwhelming i.e. my car accident recently. I was so calm and
non-reactive where as in the past I would have been an absolute mess. Yoga through asanas
moves inside the mind and quiets the nervous system. You are in a meditative state even
when you are not doing yoga. This happens over time and constant practice. You are able to
be present and aware in any given situation you are placed in.
Yoga shines you from the inside out and your true self emerges. Who you are as an individual
and who you are collectively shines through. It states in Pada 1.1 Now the exposition of Yoga
is being made. Practice is necessary for transformation to take place and it also states in
Pada 1.2 The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga. You have to be
conscious to be able to control the mind-stuff.
I used to be one of those yoginis that did not connect while doing yoga or even to students in
the room ... I had this one teacher that would constantly talk about being aware and mindful in
class. When he noticed that I had tuned out he would get in my face and bring me back into
the room. I disliked him forever until I realized what he was doing.
